To watch India in winter is to see a slow assembling of nations—nations of wings, gathered from landscapes wildly unlike our own.
Bar-headed Geese come from Mongolian lakes where the air is thin and silence absolute. Demoiselle Cranes emerge from the Central Asian steppes where grass bends under winds that sweep unobstructed for thousands of kilometres. Wigeons, teals, pintails, shovellers, godwits, and stints descend from Siberia’s short, explosive summers. Bluethroats from Europe. Wagtails from the boreal forests. Steppe Eagles from Kazakhstan.
